Brooksville Breast Cancer Survivor Group Raises $14,012 for Relay for Life
Breast Cancer Survivor Relay for Life Team
Brooksville, Florida - At first they were just a group of breast cancer survivors: wives, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and daughters brought together in their struggle against a life threatening illness.
The women, ranging in age from the 30s to the 80s, meet once a month for the Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope’s Brooksville Breast Cancer Survivors support group in Spring Hill.
One of the members, Janie Wiley, was the event chairman for Brooksville Relay for Life, volunteers on a Relay for Life team and encouraged her fellow breast cancer survivors to form their own team for the April 25-26 event.
Nineteen women stepped forward. They wanted to do all they could to fight cancer. First they set a modest goal. They would raise $2,600 for cancer research. In the end, they accomplished much more.
The Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope Breast Cancer Support Group Relay Team raised $14,012.00 for Relay for Life and was named a Gold Team at the event. But those were only some of the benefits, said radiation technologist Tambra Randazzo, who coordinates the support group.
“Those 19 ladies really bonded over the day and a half plus the time leading to up to the event,” said Randazzo. “They have now become a bonded core group. They are already planning for next year.”
That kind of bonding experience is exactly what the Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope breast cancer support group was designed to promote. The group, which is open to all breast cancer survivors, not just Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope patients and former patients, meets at the Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope center at 7154 Medical Center Drive, Spring Hill, on the first Tuesday of each month from 6 PM to 7:30 PM. Group members do more than sit and listen to inspiring speakers. In between meetings, support group members are encouraged stay in touch either by phone or email. Members also meet for lunch and dinner. The group also hosts occasional cancer free zone social luncheons.
“We encourage them to come and be a part of the group,” Randazzo said. “We don’t let anyone sit on the fringes. We buddy them up. We all know each other’s name.”

Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope Relay for Life Team Takes First Place in West Pasco Relay for Life - Raises $23,858.38
Relay for Life Team
New Port Richey, Florida – Naomi Wipert had never volunteered for Relay for Life, the annual event to raise money for cancer research. But after she went to work at Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope New Port Richey as an administrative assistant, participating in the fundraising event seemed natural. So this spring, Wipert walked in the relay with her husband and eight-year-old daughter. “I felt it was something I needed to do,” said Wipert, who had lost an aunt and a cousin to breast cancer. “It was personal for me.” The Wiperts were part of the 15-member Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope New Port Richey office’s Relay for Life team who participated in the 2008 West Pasco Relay for Life. The group raised $23,858.38 for American Cancer Society cancer research and snagged first place.
“This was a very good year,” said team captain Karen Brink, who is Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope New Port Richey's office manager. “Considering the economy, we did exceptionally well.”
Although this was the 10th year for the team, participating in Relay for Life is never routine for Florida Cancer Institute-New Hope employees. “We treat cancer patients; that’s our specialty. We walked in honor of all those patients we are treating,” said Brink. “It’s our inspiration that some day, there will be a cure for cancer. That’s our goal.”
